Build Thread: The story of Anni the 1989 110, made in the 80's reborn in the 2010's

So this is long overdue and also many years in the making. I feel it's about time to start a build thread since i just drove across country (4k+ miles) and Im moving forward to ship it to Hawaii.

Long ago in a dusty place called Camp Bastion my interest in the Defender bloomed.I've always loved the iconic trucks that screamed simplicity and practicality that seemed to be only overseas. Beyond my love affair with the 70 series Land cruiser, I didn't know much about Land Rovers except for their iconic image. In afghanistan I saw tons of Defenders from basic MOD trucks, clean white rentals , all the way to fully kitted out WMIKs.

Some common defenders I saw hanging around which added to my inspiration

A series 2 that i saw on the beach in Australia

As my ability to possibly purchase an "exotic" diesel, stick shift, adventure rig became more of a reality. I found that these defenders were "as cheap as chips" compared to 70 series LCs from Australia (at least in entry price).
Thus began a deep dive into everything land rover and reading everything in the forums about them.

Originally i was going to get an Ex-MOD and add a few WMIK and Wolf add ons.

I almost pulled the trigger on this exact Tithonus,

Eventually I found the 5 door wagons more appealing and "future proof". I did research on dealers and sent tons of emails asking for videos and photos of various rigs.
I eventually landed on this girl:
db15df2217fa93d03f463b80ff8136ce.jpg

She was an 1989 5 door 110 with a 19J engine. From looking up her MOTs and registration history it looked like she started life in southern england and then migrated u to Scotland and then back down to England a few years back. Plus she had her original paint unlike most other trucks, so i felt it was harder to hide some aspects. I didn't care about about patina and some scratches and dents, i didn't want a polished turd (which were flooding the market).

I got the shipper and broker all sorted and waited for the truck's arrival. A couple days later I hear that customs seized a bunch of defenders and on top of that I would probably be stuck in afghanistan and miss the arrival of the truck into Baltimore.

To be continued....

Saw many cool rovers in Leatherneck/Bastion as well. Had some mates in the UK REME unit who let me wrench on a coup,e and crawl about the boneyard where there was quite a few MoD variants being scrapped as no long cost effective to return. Sad, but I was able to bring home a few parts that have found a new home on my 110.

Where is the rest of your story?

Yeah, I got my MOD headlight guards off a truck in DRMO and a set of LED headlights off a gutted MRAP. Wish I could of been there when they did the final shutdown, there was some good tuff being sold and thrown away, I was stuck
Up in BAF and KAF.

You poor bastard, way too close to flagpole.

Look forward to build details.

Yeah I really liked Bastion and Mazar-i-Sharif wasn?t too bad. KAF was easy and until they tightened all the rules down even more near the end. But it wasn?t bad.

The police chief in Kabul told me I could take a late-model 110 300tdi that was sitting in the impound yard. Unfortunately I couldn't think of a practical or ethical way to get the parts home.

So I'm back in afghanistan and finding time to update my build thread.

Continued.......
So i missed the arrival of my truck to Baltimore, due to me being extended in Afghanistan. My parents offered to pick it up and they headed out to get it. At this point there was a misunderstanding, i told them that the truck seemed to run, BUT they should bring the truck and trailer and trailer it back. I guess they just heard that it runs part and they drive up to Baltimore with no truck or trailer.

They were able to pick up the truck with no real and issue and they were amazed how much attention the truck got compared to the new imports that other people were picking up. So all this leads up to 5 o'clock in DC metro area in sketchy land rover on toll road in traffic. At first the truck was running well, but then the engine got rougher and was starting to struggle and then it degraded to the point of the truck dying at idle. After barely making it through a toll booth and across 6 lanes of traffic, my parents parked it at a shopping center near Manassas and picked it up the next day.

a few pics of how it looked when it first arrived

So in September/August 2014 i started diving into the land rover world and figuring out what was wrong with my new to me truck.

I knew I wanted to eventually but in a different diesel engine, but i didn't didn't think it would be that soon.

I tore intot he truck and trying to figure out what was the issues. Pretty quickly I figured out it was algae in the tank. I drained the tank and replaced filters, but still no start and i dove trying to figure out if it was electrical, but time was running out before I left for work again.

I did a clean of the truck and ripped out the tattered headliner (the seller managed to keep the damaged bit out of the photos and video)and cleaned up the truck as best as i could while addressing easy to fix parts and any rust issues. The truck was definitely buried up in mud on the left side at some point, there was mud in the heater and mud buried in the nooks and crannies of the left side of the truck which caused some minor corrosion issues and a replacement of the bumper and steering guard, due to excessive rust..

The truck had some hidden paint defects, a dent on the rear quarter window, and some beat up doors. Beyond that truck was used, but fairly solid. It was wasn't rotten and it smelled like a barn some, but it was overall solid.

Congrats on getting the truck home.
If you found algae in the tank you probably have it elsewhere in the fuel system. I would at a minimum blow out the lines to the IP and hopefully it will fix your problem. If it is in the IP or injectors you will need to rebuild or replace them. Also check that the stop solenoid is actually letting fuel by. It could be something that simple.
A final bit of consolation, there are lots of 11J, 12J and 19J motors sitting around that people have pulled. For a few hundred bucks you can get one shipped to you via Fastenal.

So late august early sept 2014 I had to leave for work and left the truck in my parent?s car for 8/9 months. When I came back I got connected with Sarek autowerke in Richmond, VA. They confirmed my 19j was boat anchor, luckily a fairly low milage 200tdi from Italy ( I think) came up for sale. So for most of the of that spring and summer my truck sat in Richmond getting a new heart, while I lived out of my 4Runner exploring the western USA, hiking and mountain biking, and spending a large amount of time with a friend in San Diego surfing and enjoying copious amounts of Mexican food. I also ended up in Norway and traveled with a buddy to England where we bought a Citroen for ?400 and drove it to Istanbul turkey

By the end of the summer the Defender was up and running, I slapped on a set of KM1s (that i got for like150$ and yes they are still on the truck), a MOD bumper to replace out the rusted original, new oem steering guard, and I overhauled the heater system with a new heater core and GM blower fan.

by september of 2015 the truck had a 200tdi with new lots of new refurbished mechanical bits, but by then i had to leave again for a 12 to 14 months.

I got job in South Sudan and the truck was a parked again in a barn for the next year+. While in South Sudan I got some great interior parts and even a south down snorkel from a forgotten defender out in remote bush, but during some turbulence in Juba my storage area got looted and I lost all my parts.

Once I got back from south sudan in 2016 I drove the truck for 3 weeks and did some serious work on it.

During this two week time I installed
-new rear work light (works fantastic for reversing and setting up camp)
-Mantec snorkel
- LED lights all-round
-New British-Atlantic Fuel tank
-new fuel lines
-RDavisinVA Fuel sedimenter
-new radio and speakers
-interior lights and 12v power
-front diff guard
-OME steering damper
-New steering drop arm
-Heater snow cover
-rear ladder and light guards
-side window guards
-Defenders North west carling switch plate and hazard switch
-Raptor Binnacle
-Mud stuff rear door card
-Sometime before this i also installed wolf MOD headlight guards and Military Trucklite LED light that i acquired from afghanistan.

After that I spent the rest of 2016 in Iraq.

Elbee
Did the gm blower fan increase output over the gentle breeze a rover blower puts out?

Was it a direct swap or was there some fabricating as well?

Do you recall type model series of the fan unit?

Loving the write up, keep it up.
Cheers

i do believe the part is this 1994 Buick Century V6 P/N: 35333
So I've yet to really use it for heat, been hawaii for past year.
BUT the fan blows super strong if you bypass the resistor. So I suggest to upgrade the resistor at the very least.
