After ~7 years running a 200 in my '85 110 its time to change er up.

A week or two ago I located a 1998 Merc E300 a few hours north. Hauled er home last night.

OM606.962 in all it's glory.
10921

Goals of this build
  1. Keep it simple.
  2. Usable fun. ~250hp
Still getting my final plan together but here is an outline
  1. Adapted to R380 w/ LT230 (1.2 is in the truck currently, will probably stick with that)
  2. Radiator/IC/Oil cooler - TBD
  3. mounts - TBD
  4. Mechanical 603 pump

I like photos, this build should have lots, so admins if I crush your data allowance going forward, i can pony up a few bucks :giggle:

Enjoy

Got a few hours in on the E300 tonight and all I can say is this donor car was in GREAT shape... So.. much.. potential..

Back to the good stuff. Getting fluids drained off, hoses off, and vac up a few dozen acorns. scraper pile getting bigger with fenders/hood off.
10932

Injector hard lines are all getting replaced along with the gray clips.
10934

valve cover breather hose was dried out and leaking all over. gunk galore

Was really interesting to chat with you about this in the pub at winter romp. i have long admired this engine (or the BMW M57) for a Defender and will be following.

I see your 110 is RHD which I believe makes for an easier swap than LHD, due to the intake?

From memory the engine will also need a G class oil pan?

+1 on the Dieselmeken pump vs the DPUK. Ive heard of more than a few issues with the pumps from these guys, From what Ive heard they're happy to make good on any issues but requires shipping back to the UK. Goran at Dieselmeken seems to be the go to for reliable uprated pumps. I have one on a 603A that Ill be installing in my SWB 300GD this summer..

The G class oil pan can be hard to find and isn't cheap. The 603 and 606 share the same pan if I recall. 606 is an awesome motor and would be sweet in a defender. Excited to see how this progresses..

The Alt. lives real low in front of the turbo and I would guess hit a steering box. Once relocated up high that issue should be crossed off. LHD, guessing intercooler lines and or power steering lines will get tight with a steering box in that region.

Correct on the pan, need to remove the current front sump pan and get a rear sump & pump off another engine (can't find my notes on the model). a few vendors sell a kit which will probably be the route I go.

We looked to Dieselmeken while putting together the prototype OM617 Powered 109 and 110.
I don't remember all the specifics, but back then Dieselmeken would supply you with an IP that put out max fueling that would do all sorts of silly stuff I wasn't interested in like rolling coal and producing 250+ HP (something along those lines).
Kept asking for an IP that would fall somewhere mid-way between stock 125HP and twice that.
I wanted around 160 to 180 HP, that's all the 110 needed for drivability.
You would have thought I was asking for a space ship flux capacitor.
You could struggle to go up a very very steep upgrade with the stock numbers or you could drift and roll coal, but nothing in-between.
I don't remember who Howard and Don bought their IPs from, and can't speak for them, but think they got the drifting pump when they really wanted the same thing I did.

It was like having a conversation with someone fixated with a V8.
Doesn't matter what the scenario, they have to have a V8.
With a race cam and a 4 barrel to break drive-train components.
You see them at Uwharrie with a twisted driveshaft underneath that Blazer or Bronco pulled to the side of the trail.
OK, I'll take that discarded inline 6 that produces more power than anything Land Rover put in a Defender for $125 before it goes to the scrappers that will give you all the power you need with bullet-proof reliability (that was pulled out to install a V8).

Just some food for thought.

I got my pump from Barote on SuperTurboDiesel.com. It is an M Pump with 7.5 elements. It was very enjoyable but I was trying things beyond my knowledge base at the time. IP tuning is multi part: bigger IP elements and you need a turbo, air filter, and intercooler all working together. And a strong engine which you may or may not get from a junk yard W123 pull. I wish I had more time and patience as I think the OM617 platform has many pluses especially now with the better products and knowledge out there:

Complete setup available

Lots of people trying different things. There was a recent thread on different turbos being tested.

MW Pump now available

Looks really cool but still seems like a lot of variables to contend with. I will follow this build with interest (and a little jealousy) but i think the 2.8 was the right call for me.

Slow week on the merc with a few customer trucks getting priority. knocked a few items off the task list and had a few small issues crop up.
  • Dealing with a few snapped exhaust studs
  • intake manifold is off. full of crud.
  • Rear sump oil pan located in Merc motherland, purchased, en route.
  • Ordered a spare valve cover to send out to powder along with the intake manifold.
  • 5 out of 6 glow plugs are stuck. planning to drill, tap, press out.
  • Cyl #6 injector well was full of oil. TBD cause.

Few items i'm still tracking down;
  • RHD power steering box

It seems heat dissipation can be a bit tricky with these engines— keeping them cool is a repeated post on the OM Facebook groups— so pay attention to this as well. I personally think it is partially due to poor heat dissipation of the defender engine bay— even a radiator needs room to breath...

Well, what a mess this virus has made life. OM Project stalled out as I had to quickly shift gears and help my other half with her business (hair salon). A few laps through the SBA's gauntlet and Salon and employees' jobs are all safe. back to work!

Have a 2.5NAD in for a 200 swap and couldn't resist seeing how this tdci radiator fit. Once the radiator frame mounts are removed on my truck, it will sit down a good bit more and move forward slightly. promising.

bunch of parts are en route so some engine tasks can be sorted out.
