Anyone have experience with the TD6

Does anyone have experience with the TD6? Is it a good motor? Considering getting a new (or new to us) car for the wife but I'm gun shy on the petrol rovers due to the timing chain issues. May consider a TD6 if they are reliable, if not will probably go with a Lexus/Toyota. Any thoughts or real life experiences would be appreciated.

MotorTrend didn't like it: https://www.motortrend.com/reviews/1609-range-rover-td6-diesel-review/). I'm not convinced that they were using the fancy settings correctly in their offroad test.

I would still personally consider the diesel option if I were in the market. If I recall correctly, the full-size RR has an 800 mile range, which has become a bigger consideration for me over the years. In terms of reliability, I think any of these are a crap-shoot--and very few diesel RR's were sold in the US, so you may have to wait for some parts to be shipped over if you are having the dealership service it.

I like them primarily because they are way quieter than the petrol ones. If you wife does a lot of driving in heavy traffic, I would avoid it. The diesel particulate filter clogs quickly and requires regular highway driving to complete a regeneration.

We ordered the TD6 option for our Discovery work vehicle and have been very pleased with its power and efficiency. It pulled a much heavier plow truck out of a ditch last winter. The plow driver was shocked, but happy.

Also, obviously, remember that you will have to mess with the DEF fluid. Not sure that should be a deal-breaker for anyone, but it is annoying. (Eventually, the aftermarket will hopefully supply a work-around).

The DEF fluid is an added step, but the tank is pretty large so refills are infrequent. The gasoline like performance of the TD6 will definitely throw you back in your seat when you need it.

Lots of truck stops and interstate stations have def at the pump and it’s super cheap. Be careful not to go wide open if you use a big rig lane. That stuff comes out fast! It has also been pointed out that they have struggled in straight urban environments as they don’t get hot enough to regenerate. But that Shouldn’t be an issue with mixed use.

The only common actual engine problems I can think of are cam seals leaking and oil leaking through the level sensor multi plug
