Another R2.8 Install (long BH R380 version)

I took out the RH spring and got the axle within an inch of the bump stop. Clearance between the pan and DS looks good. DP is tight and I already had to cut it to even get it in there. A tight 45° radius should get it routed in the correct direction.

Pics of the clearance by the oil cooler. About a 1/2 inch between the oil cooler and the PS box. Also a pic on the LH bulkhead side.

Here are some pics of the clearance on the seatbox and transfer case. I first had the engine at more of a tilt but the LT230 shift was about hitting the seatbox. It is still pretty tight but much better. The rear bolts will have to go in as the whole lump gets a final install.

Do you have to keep the DPF ? Do they do inspections on older vehicles?

I don't think I have to keep the DPF but figured it would be nice to have. If it gets too hard to make the downpipe I will convert to a straightpipe setup.

Thanks Clay - I think once the engine mounts are welded in I can prep, primer and paint the chassis and then start putting it together for final. That's where progress feels like it's being made!

It's been a while since I've posted on this. I'm almost done and finished wrapping up the little things like air intake but ran into an issue where the clutch won't release. Looks like I'll have to take the gearbox and LT230 out and see what is going on.

Below is what I came up for the pedal. It's in pretty much the same location as the stock LR one. I need to fine tune the bracket that comes off the DBW assembly and may even make it fixed instead of pivoting to match the LR feel.

My exhaust work that I got done right before Christmas. It might rub but I'm hoping this setup will work as it's pretty tight up inside the frame rails.

I'll try and get some pics of the little items like air intake and radiator overflow setup. Those took me at least 3 iterations each. I also had to remove and lower the radiator mounts on the frame which meant redoing most of the IC/radiator tubing.

I'll start pulling the gearbox today but if anyone knows the correct throw out bearing for Chad's LB R380 kit please let me know. I used a plate/bolt and depressed the lever manually but still could not disengage the clutch disc. Not sure if the disc is stuck or throw out. Any help would be very appreciated - I want to drive this thing!!

did you torque the flywheel bolts when you installed? I am wondering if one came loose and is lodged in there. I just happened to notice that one was loose....and realized that they were not torqued to spec. confirmed by @MountainD on his as well.

also make sure that all of the clutch housing to trans bolts are all the way in. ive done this once and it fouled the backside of the flywheel , keeping the motor from spinning

I assume LB is the long bellhousing? I have the stumpy for my R2.8, and the throwout bearing I have came from Zack when I asked for "the special throwout bearing for the R380 stumpy," as per Doug's suggestion. Based on my invoice, it's this part number UTJ100210 at RN.

I had a bolt break loose inside the bellhousing and cause a world of hurt. It is not a good sound. As I have no skills whatsoever, I didn't rectify it myself, but I would definitely second the advice to make sure everything is nice and tight.

I do know that the Stumpy R380 with the 200TDI diesel and the stumpy bell housing will indeed require the stumpy throw out bearing. However, first he is using the long bell housing and not the stumpy--so I don't think so. Secondly, I was under the impression that this bearing is specifically for the stumpy with the stumpy bell housing/clutch. The R2.8 that I have, with the stumpy, came from Chad and had a throw out bearing--it also has a custom clutch release lever and the quickdraw bell housing. So I am guessing that is not the issue. The bolts on the flywheel are NOT tight--I even put out a PSA on that as I was surprised. If you did not torque that, then it could well be the cause if you have gotten this kit running. If not, then I am not sure that is why as it is doubtful one just fell out while not running and just sitting there. But who knows? I would start by taking off your floorboard, removing the clutch slave cylinder and peering through there...

I assumed the LB meant long bellhousing and tried make that clear. I don't have the technical expertise, but I know what bearing is in my stumpy, because I handed it to the mechanic who did install it. Chad sent me a replacement at the same time, and it's the same as the RN part in my stumpy. I saw your recent PSA and I'm glad you put it out there. Whatever bolt backed off or broke did so on the interstate in Virginia Sept 2020.

I'm trying to learn, but my strongest skill in this regard right now is knowing that I know nothing. :)
