(Another) Insurance Question - 1980 Scout

I was wondering if the board had any recommendations for insurance on my sister's 1980 Scout. She's concerned as to what would happen in the event of a total loss and cannot get a clear answer from several companies. Her use is very low (under 2000 miles/year)

Requirements:
Policy in CA
Agreed Value (or realistic value) in writing
No requirement for garage

Any ideas?

Garage kept ?
Hagerty, Grundy, American Collectors will insure if stored in a locked garage and not used off road.

Unfortunately not where she is moving to, no garage available.
99% of its use would be coffee on the weekends and the occasional trip to the beach.

Chubb "requires" a garage but does not ask to see one or for any proof. They issue California policies, do agreed value with or without a appraisal, just need pics of the exterior and interior of the vehicle. No mileage restriction. They do not however cover extreme off road use or vehicles with snorkles. No requirement for classic plates.

you also get free tows to any address 200mi from the point of disablement.

its a legit concern for sure. something i wouldn't do but some people are less risk adverse than I.

She however wont find agreed value/classic insurance without it. I was in that boat with a e30 M3 a decade ago. Was hit in the street outside of my house in jersey. Took me over a year to get the money on the standard policy that I had with Geico. The drunk that hit my parked car ALSO had geico. What a mess.

Whats it worth?

Are you confusing the idea of a principal place of garaging (ie where a car is normally kept) with the need to actually have a garage?

Happy to have an offline conv with you. And yes I am an insurance agent.....

I'd ballpark its worth $20-22K based on condition, current market and work she's had done recently. Yes, I'd appreciate that. Will PM you my details now. Thank you!

well what are people generally doing regarding insurance? The companies listed above are fine I am sure but if our vehicles can't be used off-road with these policies what are we supposed to do? I have a '94 and I am guessing USAA will tell me it isn't worth much if I am in an accident.

I’ve had really good luck with NCM Insurance. I used them for a NAS 90 I used to own, and my current 110. It’s somehow affiliated with the National Corvette Museum, so I feel like they are “car people.”

I think they are mainly looking for vehicles that get lower usage/mileage. I don’t know how they would handle a daily driver, or something that you wheel consistently. It’s worth asking them though.

What I like is that you get the same 2-3 people on the phone when you call or via email, and they don’t dicker around on coverage value. I’ve been able to state the value I want, and had plenty of leeway to adjust it if I wanted to. I’ve never had a claim, so can’t speak to that.

To the OP, I’m not sure how they would feel about not having a garage.

I wonder if these specialty insurance companies are coming through when there's a claim for "agreed value"? Do they just pay out no questions asked or do they make your life miserable hoping that you will give up and accept their lower offer?

Well if the damage is that bad, yup they have to. Owners often chose to keep and rebuild, in which case there is a deduction for the salvage value they would have recovered at auction.

That typically ain’t much.

Guessing ea company/adjuster is different. Years ago I did a valuation letter for Will Tillery on his lhd 130 powered with a 5.2 liter Drew Swoboda built engine. As most probably remember that truck was under sales contract with Dr Aaron/Himalaya and mysteriously dissapeared. The scenario was that Dr Aaron had put a deposit on the truck and owed the balance. Will's insurance co paid him the agreed sales price less the deposit already recieved. IE made him whole. The sales price was higher than my valuation letter.

Just learned about another point that may be helpful when looking for agreed-value insurance options....

With Chubb and Grundy (assume Hagerty & American Collectors would be the same) all household drivers need a clean driving record. So if you have a son or daughter living with you who has had a moving violation or incident, you will not be underwritten. Same goes if they live away from home, i.e., college, but are still on your auto policy and do not have their own auto insurance in their name as the policy owner.

YMMV.

FWIW, USAA has started to suck hard.
American Collectors or USAA actual? I left them for car insurance on the commuters after Geico was about 40% less, pound for pound. Still have American Collectors for the defenders.
