An Interesting Transition

Since selling the Defender I can say that I do miss it, but I'm not regretting the sale.

In the weeks before selling, once it was officially up for grabs, I automatically began putting more time back into the Series. I was able to break even on what I spent on the Defender. And I passed it on to a worthy new owner. For the past few weeks I was debating whether or not to dump the Defender money into the RRC and build the vehicle I've always wanted. But an opportunity came up to get a replacement for the Defender, so now I'm preparing to do a year long experiment: Keep the RRC, or keep the G-Wagen?

The Series is never going to be sold. The '98 Disco is just too perfect a vehicle for my son to drive when he is home from college, and for my daughter to begin driving this year. The RRC is too much of a basket case to not put a lot of money into. The G-Wagen is exceptional. The engineering and build quality is top-notch. It is like driving a late '90s Range Rover, but in the shape of a Defender. The V6 gives is just a bit more power than a '90s Rover V8, but only if you are very familiar with how those drive would you really know. It isn't as fun as a Defender, but it has AC, it has 3 lockers, the doors actually close like a bank vault, and it is actually quieter than my wife's 2015 X5 at 70mph, even with BFG MTs on.

But I'm leaving the possibility open for wanting to sell it in a year to go back exclusively to Rovers, and specifically to the RRC. Mainly, I really feel like driving the Series more, and the G-Wagen balances that out nicely.

Funny you say that about the Series v Defender.
I found my wishing for simple slow 2.5 petrol 4 cylinder Defender, points and all.

I find myself wanting a G-Wagen (1980's vintage I think) more and more. I like your collection. I will say that RRC vs Defender I find myself missing the RRC a heck of a lot more. If I could find a nice SWB for reasonable money I might be in trouble. Although, I really do think I want to scratch the G-wagen itch.

It will be interesting to see what you decide. And I agree, my 88" is going nowhere...the 109 might though.

I started researching them through a web site forum like this one. Also, one of the guys in town who used to drive a 300Tdi NAS 90, has a Federalized '86 with a OM617 and upgrades to the turbo, etc... he took me on a drive. Some people on the forum pointed me in the direction of this truck, for sale but not listed, just 20 minutes from me. I drove it, and then just waited for the Defender to sell.

It was brought in by a Registered Importer on the East Coast, owned by one guy in San Fran for some time, then bought by one of the owners of an independent shop up here. He sold it to the guy I bought it from about six years ago. I think he sold because he has three Syncro vans, one Eurovan with a camper back, a Rabbit he converted for racing, and about 20 motorbikes. After driving this for a week, I get the feeling that he really didn't drive it much, even though he did get a bit emotional when he sold it to me. Things like the radio were never programmed. And simple fixes to lights and various switches had never been done, although he had the parts.

The Puch badging really doesn't mean anything different, only that it's a true cool Euro truck. They never imported them, but left them in central and eastern Europe.

The only thing that bugs me a bit about it is that it really does have a lot of electronics. It is impressive, but it has a lot of complicated systems. However, I knew I wanted a grey market vehicle. I knew I wanted at least the inline 6, maybe a rare V8. And I knew I wanted A/C. So this W463 model is certainly an upgrade over the W460 (read Range Rover vs. Defender, but with same body) versions, but I have the Series to drive when I want the adventure factor. If I didn't have the Series, hands down, get a W460 with the OM617 turbo. They are here and there for sale, but good ones do command Defender 110 prices.

Oddly, the guy I will take this to when something breaks is less than a 1/4 mile from the guy I go to for my Rovers.

I like that G wagon. They’re great trucks. I usually recommend them to people who want the look but don’t want to deal with the quirks of a defender. They’re not as simple as a defender but I’ve always been under the impression that they’re more reliable.

My girl sometimes expresses an interest in them and the RRCs but we have a defender and a series now as well as her Golf so it’s hard to justify for just the two of us. Maybe someday if I build a bigger garage out here.
I always like to have a project to be working on.

Have owned a wide variety of Rovers over the years. However there is only model owned twice - RRC LWB. A ‘93 that unfortunately was totaled in an accident and now a ‘94. Just an overall great Rover that fulfills on many fronts.
