All Fastener Sizes on a NAS Defender

So I have seen this on other forums for other vehicles, but never for a defender. Maybe it already exists?

The big ones few people have until they own a defender are like the T55 Torx, the posidriv, especially the PZ4 for the door hinge bolts, the 27mm (or 1 1/16 and go up a size if you have the chrome lug nuts that swell), the 36mm for the fan clutch (I can’t remember if the 93-95 are 36mm or 32mm for the fan clutch). Also things like the 17mm 12 point for the swivel ball bolts (and other places where you need a 12 point which are now escaping my memory).

If someone wanted to put together a set of screwdrivers, wrenches and sockets for all fastener sizes so they knew they had them, or more specifically to my circumstance, wanted a set to take on trips, what all would they need to bring, and what would they never use?

If someone is really ambitious, we could also compile the actual size of the bolts and screws, not just the head sizes. I know @JimC did something like that at one point as he told me what to order from McMaster Carr, but I can’t find it.

I’m sure I still have that list somewhere, but it’s at least 15 years old and i would revise it. I did some size substitutions where the right metric bolts weren’t available in stainless etc.

This is a worthwhile endeavor anyway, many people seem stymied by screw and bolt sizes etc and there are lots of places where its sensible to put in something that’s not original.

I’m slowly starting to compile that kind of list.

I found the thread on the other board with Tony, was that what you were referring to?

Here is what it is for a second Gen tacoma. If we had this it would be super valuable. If I get time, I will get started on it this weekend.

Found this on the web sometime ago and I can't remember where or the author or verify the all sizes but, the couple times I referred to it, what I was looking for was correct. Might be some help...

That looks correct to me

So I went around and fit some wrenches and sockets on various things.

As far as I can tell, nothing other than in the transmission (36mm deep for the big nut) and the fan clutch nuts (32mm on v-belt and 36mm on serp), and the oil filter fitting boss (32mm) is bigger than 30mm. 30mm is the trailing arm and radius arm bolts, the t-case and diff out/inputs. Maybe other stuff I am not thinking about. 10, 13, 14, 17, 19, 22, 24 seem the most common sizes. I guess 6mm and 8mm too (I found a 7mm — the nut holding the screws that holds the third brake light base to the light bar on a soft top). 14mm is the swivel ball to axle bolts and the driveshaft bolts. Also some power steering lines. 27mm is an oil sender, lug nuts, drain plug.

What I have not found yet is what sockets and wrenches you don’t need. Is there 9, 11, 12, 15, 16, 18mm, 21mm anywhere? There has to be an 11mm somehwre I don’t think there is 20mm, 23mm, 25mm, 26mm, 28mm (although 28mm works on swollen capped lug nuts) and nothing ever has a 29-31mm or 33-35mm. I know there is some odd sized stuff on the NAS 110 HVAC system (I found a 16mm there maybe that is SAE?) and the brass radiator fill plugs seem to be 21mm, but that is aftermarket. The plastic one is maybe a 20mm? I assume they are SAE? IAC valve is 32mm.

So the whole point of this is to put together a travel tool kit for NAS land rovers (also to just know what I won’t ever need).

I don’t mind so much carrying a full set of sockets, but carrying wrenches you don’t need because they don’t exist is kind of silly. Seems like 8, 10, 13, 14, 17, 19, 22, 24, 27, 30 plus fan clutch wrench 32mm in my case gets it done.

I ordered a Gedore 1B-08 combination wrench set (10, 12, 13, 14, 17, 19, 22, 24) with the idea it would go in the rover based on what I knew about what sizes were on the truck before this exercise. It was like $80 on Amazon.de I also like the $87 Gedore 1/2in ratchet kit (on Amazon.com) (No 14mm but it goes 10-32mm And the 14mm head fasteners all seem like they are wrench ones on a NAS Defender anyway except for maybe the intake manifold but you also need Allen (6mm? 8mm?) to get the plenum off. As of now I toss the Gedore red kit in when I need sockets and ratchets but it won’t fit in the tool box under the seat. I somehow convinced myself that there were 11mm and 15mm I rovers, but I guess not? Knock on wood, I don’t think I would need to remove radius or trailing arms on the side of the road and would use sockets for those and the output shafts.

A few pliers, a 3/8 socket set, a 6 in one screwdriver (for hose clamps and the Phillips I have swapped in before I knew better) PZ1-3 screwdrivers, a breaker bar, a couple hammers, a prybar, something to do spark plugs (yes, I have used the one that comes in the factory tool kit) and you should be able to do pretty much anything you could hope to do on the side of the road or in the field.

Also you will want a T55 for the fill plug on the R380 and T50 if you want to get off cage bolts for whatever reason …. that reminds me I need to check the size of the drain plug on the R380.

I also have been taking an engine apart, so I can check that in the future. I know the rod bolts are 12 point, but I forget what size.

So here is the list for NAS Defenders (work in progress):

Wrenches: 6, 7, 8 (all optional as they are uncommon for repairs and can be done with a nut driver or pliers usually — 1/4 works for 6mm and 5/16 usually works for 8mm so once again the 6 in 1 screwdriver), 10, 13, 14, 17, 19, 22, 24, 27, 30, 32mm (fan clutch, 36mm if you have a 97). You will want 10 and 14 in 12 point if you buy 6 point. You can stop at 24mm as a practical matter and use sockets for the larger ones. I am also assuming you will do hub nuts with a chisel on the side of the road or will buy the hub nut socket. BTW if you have SAE wrenches for the set, 3/4 works for 19mm (always), 15/16in works for 24mm (mostly), 1 1/16 works for 27mm (always), 1 1/4 works for 32mm (mostly). 30mm is like 1 3/16in but no one has a 1 3/16 wrench …

Sockets: 8, 10, 13, 14, 17, 19, 22, 24, 27, 30. I am sure there are 6mm floating around the truck somewhere too.

Hub nut socket: 2 1/16th (or a chisel)

I can’t remember, are the bolts on the back of the rotor 14mm or 13mm? I know they are 12 point. Whatever that is you want 12 point, but I would get 6 point for the base set(s). You also want an 8mm 12 point preferably 1/4 drive for the valve cover bolts and I think there are 10mm 12 point floating around.

Screwdrivers: PZ 1-4 (#4 is door hinges so good luck with that I can’t see why you would carry one in the truck … but you will use 1-3 a lot). Slotted: TPS small I am sure there are others, hose clamps medium if you are not using the nut part, the giant one for the floor bolts. I am sure you will find some previous owner who put in some phillips in so a #1 and #2 is a good idea. To that end, a 6 in 1 screwdriver is in all my rovers and other cars because they are so handy. I use them as nut drivers for hose clamps. The acetate channellock is the best one I have found, but Klein and Wiha make some nice ones too.

Torx: T50 (cage bolts buy spares you will break some), T55 (R380 fill). I recommend 1/2in drive for both (T50 1/2 drive is hard to find so you will want to order them).
I
Allen: 6mm plenum, [6mm?] starter, there are some what must be SAE also on the plenum elsewhere, but I am not sure why you would need to take them off
