A Memorial re-power of sorts

Update. Yesterday was the one year anniversary of her passing. Tough day and I really wanted to work on Landy, but my youngest daughter is still at home ( she is getting married in 4 weeks) so I spend the day with her and we went out to eat at one of my wife's
favorite places. In the evening we had a few drinks of remembrance. Over all a good day.
The motor is completed and ready for install. The transmission is all but ready, I have to clean up the bell housing and put in the new clutch fork and throwout bearing.
A question. Can the motor, transmission and t-case be removed and installed as an assembly? All bolted together? I would think so but would like to know what you say.
Thanks.

Thank you for sharing this sentimental build with us. It's nice that your daughter is getting married and you're able to spend time with her.

Yes, it can. It is one heavy lump, and doing it alone can be concerning. It's a lot of momentum once it's in motion. I've done it both ways - alone and with someone else.

Started removing the old 2.5 today. Hopefully Ill have it out by tomorrow. It looks like the radiator fan shroud from the 2.5Td is not going to fit on the 200TDi radiator. The only one I can find online is for 300TDi. Are they the same? Any suggestions?

Update. Actually feel like I made some progress. Got the old motor, transmission and transfer case out. Took everything out bolted together no problem and think that is the way to go. Cleaned the engine compartment and started installing the gauges. Tomorrow Ill paint the engine compartment areas and hopefully be installing the motor and transmission Saturday.

Installed the motor, transmission and t-case last night. All went well. Still have lots to do but heading in the right direction. This week ill be reconnecting the bits and pieces, fabricating a center instrument panel and remove the rear diff wishbone to replace the ball joint and put in new bushings. Going to be a great week!

Update. Springs and shocks are in. All bushings replaced. All gauges in place and wired. With the addition of the clock, tach, pyro and voltmeter I fabricate a center dash and switch plate. The gauges really ate up a lot of time. Fitting the radiator, inner cooler and figuring out how and where all the piping and air clean fit. I have to put this on hold for a couple weeks. My youngest daughter's wedding is in week and a half and I have to make the woodshop back into a woodshop and build a few things for the wedding.

This is heartbreaking and so sorry for your loss.

I'm into Rovers because of my wife (I wanted a 4Runner)... I love the idea and it's a great way to memorialize your wife.

Keep up the good work.

Way to dive all in on your list. It looks like you're going to make it to the lookout tower in June!
Happy times ahead with your daughters wedding...bittersweet to be sure. Sorry your wife won't be able to share these moments.
The love & inspiration in your family is obvious. What a roller coaster ride of emotions this all must be for you.
Cool thread.

I was wondering who got that 200tdi. Glad it went to you. Great project and you're moving along well. I have the LHD twin of your truck and want to do the same swap eventually (or Isuzu 2.8). Posts like yours encourage me to do it. Keep up the good work!

Back at it. The wedding was outstanding, truly a great time. When I get pictures ill post some.
Was able to button up most things there are a few items left still. Was able to get the motor running no problems. I disconnected the wire to the fuel pump so I could crank the motor to get good confirmed oil pressure. Once I got confirmed oil pressure I reconnected the fuel pump wire it fired right up. Runs a little rough at idle, probably could use some injectors. But over all wonderfully.
Missing the brake booster vacuum line and have a slight fuel leak at the line from the lift pump to the fuel filter. Those parts are on the way. So I haven't driven it much, just around the neighborhood. Two concerning things noted while driving. Cant downshift into 2nd gear without grinding geas, appears 2nd gear synchro might be bad. And there is some sort of slap sound in the transmission when under a load and the clutch is pushed in.
Once I get the brake booster working and the fuel leak fixed ill investigate more.

Confirmed that the suspect transmission T-case are bad. Took the pto drive cover off the transfer box and observed lots of play the the transmission mainshaft and transfer box input gear. So now what? I have the LT77 and L230 I took out with the 2.5Td removal. The transmission in a 51A prefix, do you think that will work ok with the 200Tdi?

An update. Lots have been going on a wedding, work and preparing my house for sale. I did order a R380 and transferase from Ashcroft. That arrive ok and was an easy install. I installed an ARB bumper and yard sale Warn Model 8274. Had issues with the winch and ended up rebuilding it. Replaced the door hinges and door seals. Got everything back to gather and drove it about 15 miles. Noted a fuel leak at the line from the lift pump to the filter. Have tried several other lines and can't seam to get a good seal at the lift pump.

Im pushing a deadline on getting the house ready so time to work on Landy is very limited. Still planning on taking it to north Idaho June 18-22 for the 30th anniversary. Other noted issues, speedo still doesn't work and the tach seams to read a slower RPM that actual. Ill reset the tach and have ordered a new hall effect sensor. Any way sorry for not posting much lately.

All loaded up and heading out. Got about 510 miles to the fire lookout tower. I have put on about 120 miles since all the work. I have tools, and extra starter, alternator, fuel filter and AAA card. Going to send it.

Better late than never. Sorry for posting this so late. I did complete the memorial build with the planed trip to the fire lookout tower where my wife and I had our honeymoon 30 years ago. It was a good trip and a needed trip.
Since the trip I have sold my house in WA state, bought a home in NW Montana, Trout Creek area and moved everything including the wood and auto shop to Montana. So a lot has gone on since.
About the trip; 1500 miles round trip, three states and no mechanical issues. Landy did well. Loving the 200tdi and R380. I got an average milage of 24 mpg.
-The tires; Falcon Wildpeaks were great! Not loud on the pavement. I did a lot of gravel roads and a few ATV trails. The have great traction and do not pick up a lot of rocks. I like them so much Im going to put them on my LR3.
-The new suspension. Again I like it a lot. Far better than what was on there. No annoying side to side sway and firm.
-200tdi; it was a used motor with about 110k milage. It idles rough and soothes out just off and above idle so I think injector and pump rebuild would help that out. Good milage and acceptable power, I can comfortably cruise at 60 mph.
-R380; no issues, would like to add an oil cooler, think that would make it even better.
-The rebuilt transferase; Only complaint is there is a metallic type gear noise present with a load and only in the non-diff lock position. Sound goes away in diff lock. I had an up graded diff pin installed, I think that might be it. But no other issues.
-VDO gauge suite; spedo, tach, , oil psi, fuel, temp, EGT, volt, clock. All good, and sweet looking. The fuel gauge is irritac but I feel that is the sending unit in the tank.
-Over all impression on a long trip. Well, it rattles, loud, a lot of heat comes through the floor, typical D90 stuff. It handles well and the offload ability is amazing. An upgrade on the seat would be a welcome. Over all I like it even more. I don’t think my wife would of enjoyed the trip as much as I did. She was more in favor of comforts. One thing I like about this rig is that it brings smiles to peoples faces. I want through a road construction area and saw a worker filming me with his phone. I feel good that I can create a smile for someone even for a brief moment.
In looking back I see that the rebuild and trip was very good for me. It gave me something to focus on during a hard time, gave me goals and something to work towards. Yes it did help recall a lot of memories and in the end that is all we have left
Thanks for the support and following along
