300Tdi Vacuum Pump leaking oil again

These pumps seem to be nothing but problems, I'm on my 3rd unit, the 2nd one failed (froze up solid) in less than 100 miles and now, the 3rd, like the 1st, is leaking a lot of engine oil and making a mess.
Has anyone converted to a stand alone, 12VDC electric powered vacuum pump ?
How many inches of hg is required for the original power brakes to function properly ('97 NAS 4.0 repower) ?

I drilled and bolted mine while it was still on the engine. Even for me, it was a quick job. I think mine might be leaking again, but now I just need to unbolt the top plate and try some more Right Stuff.

I have my original and 1st unit still, so its the perimeter seal that goes bad around that cover plate ?
(seems to have about 7 or so rivets holding it in place)

Yes. But I’ve also notice oil coming from the small circle protrusion on the face of the cover plate. I think this is where the valve is, and I don’t know how to fix that. I have not figured out if my current leak is the main cover plate, or just this valve leaking. I’ll have to wipe it down and check after consecutive drives.

If it is leaking again, I think I might try an actual paper gasket plus Right Stuff.

I have OEM and (knocking on wood) haven’t had an issue yet. Definitely grease the gasket before you replace, see no reason not to go RTV there but its a hard place to clean so make sure the old gasket is 100% removed. Also make sure you have the right bolts there, maybe they are bottoming out in the holes and your seal isn’t great.
