300tdi conversion air intake

I have a 110 that was a petrol and is now a 300tdi. I don’t have the vent on the side wing for the air intake. Currently the air is just sucked in from the engine bay.

I feel like she should get fresh air. What are my options that don’t involve replacing the wing panel. I’m not opposed to cutting a hole and installing a correct looking vent, but that is not my first choice.

Is there an option to draw air through the top of the wing?

Would a raised air intake improve my air flow or restrict it?

Thoughts?

Cutting a hole for a side vent looks horrible no matter how it is done. You really need to replace the wing side skin to do it right.
A snorkel or running a hose to the underside of the wing vent are the only way to get fresh air to your motor other than running a hose to the front as @Viton did on his truck . My last 2 trucks I went with a snorkel.

That was my thought on cutting the wing. And I don’t see how I can match my brown patina with a new wing skin.

Was there a snorkel kit you would recommend?

I am going to try and keep this thread updated with a solution. I too have a 300tdi which replaced the v8. Prior owner had a poorly routed hose to the drivers side wing but clutters engine bay and looks like an afterthought. I have a few ideas in mind for a clean install without going through the side fender

What is the opinion on running a snorkel with a VNT? I know the turbo folks recommend against it.

The length of the intake will directly impact performance the vehicle and the small VNTs may experience compressor surge due to the pressure. I would only run an off the snorkel if I absolutely had to, in a situation that requires it.

there's a few fabricators here in the US and in the UK who can do 4-in diameter snorkel specifically made for defenders and that's what I'll be running on my new engine when it's all set up

Interesting. I have the VNT and a snorkel, haven’t noticed any surge. I can take the snorkel off the air cleaner and see if I can hear any classic surge sound or any difference. But I ran without the snorkel for a long while and don’t think it sounded any different.

I had a snorkel on my 84 but have just taken it off and 20201218_181718.jpg00r0r_fYuezkGdRyi_0CI0t2_1200x900.jpg00x0x_gbCC6bgEvxY_0CI0t2_1200x900.jpg20201218_181703.jpg am ordering a new wing now. Here's a few pics of the snorkel. Quite a hack job but you couldn't tell with the snorkel on.

Snorkel itself isn't the hard part. It's the plumbing from the snorkel to the air filter. Southdown type enters in a hole cut in the wingtop just in front of the bulkhead/windscreen, and is the tidiest layout. NAS type uses existing wingtop vent aperture, so no new holes. IDK how hard it'd be to plumb either one. LHD v. RHD have different engine bay layouts, as do the different type engines.
If the wingtop vent opposite the one used for the heater intake is an actual vent and not a blank, you're covered. Agree with O2batsea
