1997 NAS Japan

Newbie here. What information should I be aware of when looking to purchase? Should price come down with a Japanese version? How can I verify mileage? Anything else specifically I should know when looking into this purchase? Thanks in advance!

"How can I verify mileage?"

You have hit the nail on the head about why Japan spec D90s are worth less than NAS. It is impossible to verify mileage history. They were delivered new with KM odometers, so if it now has an odometer in miles it is definitely TMU (true mileage unknown). If it retains a KM odometer, some chance it could be original mileage but then again, these odometers are infamous for failing and without a carfax history, impossible to know for sure if its original or not.

They will also never have service history, often smell of smoke, and should be ~20% less than NAS same for same, although there are lots of uneducated buyers and unscrupulous sellers who pass them off as "identical".

Having lived in Tokyo for 5 years in the late 90’s and having purchased a used ‘96 RHD Disco while there I can appreciate the smoke comment. Many Japanese men smoked. However the service of my Disco was impeccable at the dealer and as I bought it used they looked up the service history for me. They might not be identical to a NAS version yet very close. There is a nice write up on ECR’s site on them that will provide you with the differences.

You can check the date code on the speedometer body to get some more confidence that it's the original speedo.

Yea, the smoking rate in Japan is very high and you can get a rig that stinks like an ashtray.

I agree they should be worth a little bit less. They're still 50-State legal like NAS trucks though, so that really helps with value.
