My name is Phil Tanner. I am by no means a mechanic, more so an admirer and Defender 90 enthusiast who is honored to own a true NAS D90 in very near factory originality. This probably means you know more about this wonderful car than I do and that is OK, but I can promise you I will give you my honest account of my ownership and the car as I know it.

There is a lot to like about this car. It is a head turning and factory applied Alpine White, with classic Defender lines and presence with a clean Pennsylvania title. I am the 3rd owner of this classic D90-NAS. The car was originally bought from a dealer in Atlanta and stayed there for 20 plus years. The second owner bought the vehicle in 2016 to add to his collection of classic cars in Hilton, Head South Carolina. From the extensive records of both earlier owners (see below maintenance log and records), the 2nd owner only put approximately 6k miles from the time of purchase until I was lucky enough to acquire in 2021. Being garage kept and minimally driven from 2016 through today, this D90 does not show the typical frame and trouble spot issues as other D90’s of its age and mileage. The car is clean, unique, and recognizable. People stare or comment whenever I drive it or park it. As I said, I am not a mechanic, but I cannot find a rust hole anywhere on it, and neither has a local mechanic with D90 experience nor a local collector of vintage British vehicles after their inspections. I have only been able to find very small and isolated surface rust areas (see pictures). I have done minimal maintenance, such as replace the front & rear brake shoes and calipers, changed the oil and filter as after inspection nothing else was needed or recommended. Plus, it’s got the correct/original D90 NAS front/side indicator and parking lamps, 5 speed, sunroof and a/c. And it runs and drives great. A truly “fun” drive.

The downside of this NAS D90 is it is 27 years old and has 164k miles. From my understanding from D90 enthusiasts is the mileage of a D90 is not a critical as it’s condition. Again, my non-mechanic understanding, but a plausible answer due to its utilitarian mechanical design and workability. Mechanically: The transmission is the factory correct R380, and when I first bought /drove I was concerned that the shift from 1st to 2nd caused an occasional “grind”. After much discussion and research, I have concluded this is a VERY common experience with the R380 transmission in the NAS D90, and the recommendation is to be patient on the shift from 1st to 2nd or to “double clutch” from 1st to 2nd. Exterior: The paint is in good condition. As noted, there are a few surface rust spots (see pictures). When I bought, there was a hardened glue residue along the exterior of both the left and right cab rain channels. My only guess is it was used to secure a non-factory safari box or some other sort of top of cab carrier. None the less, I have been able to remove most of the hardened glue residue using a 3M rubber eraser wheel (like a pencil eraser) attached to my cordless drill. See pictures for results. On the interior, the rear header board and fabric on the cab have begun to sag near the cab sky lights. I have re-installed the rear jump seat clips to secure them in the upright position and all work as designed.

If interested in buying this one of kind NAS D90 SW, give me a call at 412-445-8267 or email me at p_tanner@msn.com. I am happy to let you drive and/or inspected as you see fit.

Just an opinion, yet, 90k seems high for a ‘95 D90 with 164k miles. As a fyi, the upper rear windows are called Alpine Windows vs cab skylights. GLWS though.

90K for 164 miles + those rust marks at the tub capping are ominous signs of what could be underneath that metal capping making this pretty rich for people who know what that could mean...

That said - I hope you get it - this will raise my D90 value!

@sila109 Thank you for the insight regarding the tub capping. Regarding value, I am willing to work toward a fair number for all involved. Hope that helps clarify.

As a seller it is always good to know what is also available. Basically a twin of your Landy. PM me if you want the website. Pls note I’m not selling or connected to this. Just thought it might be useful info for you.

What range do you value it @blueboy
My opinion was based on the really clean, relatively low mileage one I posted as a comparison for $93.8k. This one is much higher in mileage, shows signs of rust under the capping, and shifts rough between 1st and 2nd. Plus some interior issues. Know RRC values better than D90s so wouldn’t want to give a value. Again my comment was based on what else is available for sale. The true value will be what someone buys it for.
