1993 RRC Stuck, Cartersville Ga Area!!

Alright folks, I just picked up a 1993 RRC around Tampa earlier today. Flew in, checked it out, and hit the road back to Chicago. Truck was doing great, has 144k on the clock and cruising 75-80 mph really smooth on coils. No trouble lights on dash and temp holing steady. Well, I made it to Cartersville Georgia, and headed north thru Chattanooga and Nashville. I started hearing a loud slap bang about two hours into the trip when I slowed down to about 5 mph since there’s an accident on the expressway. I pulled over checked everything, couldn’t see any sign of something wrong, driveshafts looked solid and I continued on my way with the noise getting heavier as I sped up. Got to a gas station checked it again couldn’t see anything I drove it around the block noise was gone got back on the expressway sounded fine. Basically the noise comes and goes depending on how I turn the wheel and it definitely comes back if I put it in reverse with the wheel cranked to one side, so I’m guessing something with maybe the brake caliber or the brakes shoes are binding up. Hoping there is a shop or someone on my way up north that can take a quick look at it. I think I’ll be ok, has been for most of the trip so far, but I still have a ways to go, and don’t want the wheel to fall off 🤷🏻‍♂️, any assistance would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

My suggestion is to go online and find the closest LR Dealer. They should be able to at least diagnose the problem and let you know how severe or not it is.

Is anything loose / hanging hitting around the engine bay? How hot are the wheels to the touch if you suspect brake bind?

It sounds a little like a seized viscous coupler in the transfer case, combined with a loose chain.
It would make sounds like you've described, without any obvious clues. But if that's the case, it needs to be fixed ASAP.
