Oil levels are all topped off - everything else is fantastic. Just the droning. It seems to get worse going uphill but maybe because a slight RPM drop on the hills. Thanks for thinking of me - totally forgot to post a final update as I got distracted when the timing belt thread started
Fix one...
Little thread revival here as I never posted a final update.
This was a wild experience but very satisfying to complete yourself. I wouldn't call it difficult in terms of mechanisms, etc, but lifting/moving/aligning such heavy equipment is quite tricky.
I think the key here is to really work...
Long overdue update -
7 of the 8 valve stem seals were removed easily by hand (loose). The new ones were nice snug fits carefully tapped on using a socket.
After a valve adjustment I went to turn the key and NOTHING.
Forgot to plug in fuel shutoff solenoid. BOOM. Fired up and running smoother...
Yes Defender 200tdi and I believe 300tdi intake. I think in another thread I accidentally typed 300 “head” instead of intake.
I noticed as I went to install the rockers that a few of the valve stem seals were off their seats. Currently awaiting delivery of a spring compressor. Luckily I have...
Some good progress,
Timing chest cleaned up and new cam sprocket and crank seals pressed in - I like the OEM stuff because it comes greased.
I’ve added a longer camshaft gear bolt - I made sure the bolt was able to screw all the way into the nose of the cam to ensure it wouldn’t “bottom...
Progress has been slow but steady.
I was able to remove the timing chest, cam followers and lift pump today.
I removed the front plate securing the camshaft but have been unable to slide the shaft out. It feels like it’s hung up on something.
I have a jig to keep it level/balanced while...
Alright - Parts Order is in sans a couple things:
1 I couldn't find any stateside supplier for the O ring that fits into the large retaining washer on the camshaft pulley
2 Also couldn't locate the camshaft pulley bolt that started this whole mess - I've read somewhere that people prefer to...
I think you’re right - the PO was pretty meticulous and very experienced - everything torque marked and clean as a whistle. I don’t know how, but the bolt definitely backed out and caused this whole fiasco.
I removed the rocker assembly (looks to be damage free) and pulled the rods
Number...
Yes, end of the cam snapped off. I was only able to find a single post in another thread from someone who had the exact same issue.
Have been researching all day - seems a top end rebuild is in order as erover stated. I believe timing chest, fuel pump and cylinder head need to be removed...
I removed what was left inside the gear - the threads on the end of the bolt are worn - I think it loosened/backed off a bit (would explain the slight rattle I heard before this happened) and then camshaft end sheared.
Well, front cover is off - I bought a heavy duty breaker bar, propped it on the frame and flicked the starter.
When I removed the front cover the camshaft timing pulley fell out - Belt is intact but was clearly rubbing as there’s quite a bit of material in the bottom of the cover.
I guess the...
Thanks for the input Gents.
Bummer - I have a new belt in the tuffy box and was about to put it in for peace of mind. Just couldn’t get that damn crank bolt off.
I pulled the rocker cover and everything looks to be in order. Won’t really know until I pull the rods.
In the mean time I’m...
Hello all,
200tdi here
i have yet to post an update on the transmission swap but pics and updates coming soon - long story short - Success!
But -
Of course, tonight, on my way home from an event, I heard a rattling (I thought was the Speedo cable but then noticed it corresponded with RPMS) -...
Just noticed the replies and my previous post (facepalm) I am going to try the suggestions today and see if anything change. Thanks so much for the replies
Been meaning to post an update for a long time. I installed a dual relay for the headlights. They?re definitely brighter and I?m loving it. For some reason when I flash the brights or turn them on they stay on and won?t turn off unless I turn the main headlight switch off then on. Additionally...
It worked. I feel stupid for not immediately trying that. I figured because it was whining without the key in there was some greater wiring issue. Don't know what Id do without this forum.
Would love some help figuring out what to do.
After sitting outside in the cold overnight I went to start my 200ti... It turned a couple times then stopped and left me with a whining noise. Even if I pull the key out this noise continues. I have to pull the battery cut off switch to stop it...
