Lots of New-Defender competitors look much better

Grenadier isn't here yet, and UAZ most likely will never show up state-side. I was blown away when Ural motorcycles showed up officially in LA.

Some of the new Def's competition comes from other Rovers.
Rivian compromises cargo bed volume/utility with some of its slick features, biasing it more toward SUV than pickup.

Between Bronco, Grenadier, Hummer, etc there’s a lot of great LR alternatives out now.

Looks neat and cheap.

Also the Rivian looks really impressive:

Bill Burke's involvement with Rivian development is what piqued my interest. While it appears to perform decent off-road, it's goofy looking and a bit disappointing watching it search for traction like the yummy mummy Rovers.

A JL wrangler is a lot closer to an old defender than anything else out there.
And with the 392 version it's like a correctly powered NAS 110 V8.

This weeks TruckShow podcast had some reviewers from the Four Wheeler 4x4OTY test and there were a lot of positive mentions of the 392. It seems it's only downfall is the fuel mileage.

I would like one with a manual and the 707hp engine. Not going to happen of course (maybe the 707hp happens).

Anyway, I am happy with my 4 banger 5 speed 4x4 taco for my modern 4x4.

I just rented one for a day. Definitely a very nicely priced vehicle for what it is and honestly, as a whole, it’s very good for highway driving and utility. It’s disappointing that Land Rover gave up on the utilitarian side of their line. Now it’s all the exact same vehicle with different bodies styles to fit your “lifestyle.”

We rented an LWB JK when we went to the islands a few years ago and I liked it.....

Could be cool:

Modern VW is an unreliable, expensive to fix brand. My daughter just ditched her Tiguan that every 2 years needed a new, expensive water pump due to the housing being made of plastic. Her last straw was when the turbocharger housing started leaking oil at 26k miles. I would bet their "Scout" will be made just as poorly. Me personally, I would gamble on the Russian UAZ before buying another VW.

Yes, I couldn't agree more. A friend bought a Tiguan same time as my X5, she is doing like 10k for the last 5 years, it goes to dealer every years to replace the broken parts. I lost counts how many new parts are going in there. My X5 is doing fine with just regular maintenance.
