This will be a great thread. I haven't seen one in person so I do have a question. Is that a 5 bar tread plate on top of the fender, or a sticker resembling 5 bar? I like it, one of the many notable attributes of the old defender is the 5 bar on the fenders, which in my opinion is wonderful. Make a great tool storage flat spot when working and when camping that is the go to location for my cook stove.

It is 5 bar but it's not a thick aluminum 5 bar, it's plastic. It also is painted gloss and rather slippery and angled so tools could slide off easier. I hope someone makes a replacement that is stronger and not painted with gloss paint so it will be more functional. I'll try to get a good pic for you.

Have you had any time in an LR3/4? If so how does the New Defender compare driving wise? Thanks for doing this thread (y)

It is plastic. It is not on the fender, it is part of the hood. Traditional Defenders did not ever come with tread plate on the fender.

I have a 2006 LR3 and I love that truck so much. In my opinion the new Defender should have been the next generation of the LR4. It is the same size and has more in common with it than a Defender. It drives so nice. The engine and transmission make it climb hills perfectly and there is a lot of torque and power. They nailed the engine and transmission on this one. Instant power from the throttle, no lag.

It looked like plastic to me as well, but I was hoping it was thin aluminum. It's clearly there for looks and not function sadly.

You may want to look under the hood. The downside compared to the LR4 is half the cargo room and loss of the tailgate.
It has a little less cargo room than an LR3. My LR3 has a V8, my new Defender has an Ingenium 6. Exterior dimensions are almost identical between LR3/4 and new 110.

Congrats on the purchase! This appears to be the well equipped model, yes? If you don't mind, ball park, how much coin was it? The local LR dealer is listing several trucks available w/ various trim levels and they all are substantially more than originally advertised pre-release. The base "S" model is currently listed at just a hair under $62k. Pre-release pricing for the same truck was $49-$50k. Not sure if the jacked-up price is regional or the same across the country. I was slightly interested at $50K, no interest at $62k.

In PA some of the local dealer markup was in the 12k-15k range. i guess the comeback to the US tax? I assume stealerships can do whatever they want in regard to vehicle costs?

Thank you for that. We have an LR4 and a current model RRS. My wife loves my daughter's LR4 (I like the LR4 way more than the RRS) but wants something newer when the lease on the RRS is up next year. I've been thinking new Defender could work well. Good to hear the V6 works well - it can be laggy in the RRS.

Like people have said it feels weird calling it a "Defender" but I'm almost thinking of it as an LR6. Or Series 5 but I don't want to tarnish the Series name either ;)

The 6 cylinder adds $12350 right off the bat!!
I know the 6cyl adds a good wad of cash to the equation but the base S they are advertising at $62K is 4cyl w/o any bells or whistles. The SE w/ 6cyl and well equipped is advertised at $73k so $12,350 added cost for the 6cyl makes sense but otherwise it's stripped compared to the SE. Seems like they jacked the price of the base model.
