Do we have any members around Carlisle, PA? Just got word that the Army is moving us up there this summer. I haven't lived on the East Coast in two decades. I'm wondering what it will be like. What are the Rover happenings up there?

I'm the president of roversclub.org and we have several events in the area. You are also nicely positioned for all the ROAV events.

For you exploring the Bald Eagle and Rothrock State Forests will be of interest. Check out Purple Lizard Maps.

You will be about an hours drive from all the NoVa Rover guys. You will have plenty of great company to Rover and drink with.

A little further south are 2 events in the Uwharrie National Forest in April and October.
You'll be closer to some really good events.

Carlisle Car show events are pretty crazy, well, depending on which ones you go to. I used to be a vendor there when I managed an old school speed shop. In the past years, the import and truck shows have had huge turnout, but the swap meet is (from what Im told) second to none. Used to walk that with my old man some 20 years ago scavenging NOS GM parts. They have been hosting huge events for quite a while.

I've stopped there a few times on the way to and from SC, its a nice town. Dickinson College is there, Penn State also has a campus. Its a good location not far from many big cities. Rausch Creek park isn't far either.

I'm sure it'll be good. I'm considering PA locations if I get a job with Delta out of JFK. I really liked be on the east coast in terms of proximity to lots of Rover events.

I should expand on my post above a little more. In the PA state forests they have "remote" camp sites. These are not in campgrounds and often don't have other sites near them. Also, they are free, but you do have to register for them ahead of time. You can easily cover 50-60 miles on dirt in a day up around my area and that's only about a 2 hour drive from Carlisle.

The state forests have a lot to offer.

I'm not much of an event guy. The Romp is the exception, but only because of the people there. I prefer to do self-organized trips with a good group of amigos. Still, I'm looking forward to checking out the PA woods and @jymmiejamz says good things about Vermont backroads.

That's funny how East Coast guys are attached to "events..."
Nothing against events - it just shows the difference in life style.

Peter,

The difference in affinity for events may stem from the combination of more people and fewer wide open spaces. Or maybe Back Easters just dig big groups more.

Exactly. "Events" for me means hanging out the with the same +/- 10 guys I've been doing this with for 15+ years. We just don't have the places to go like the West.

I believe you do your own work, but you will also be near Trevor Griffiths at British 4x4 Specialists and Neil at Red Door Offroad. They would be two of my first picks for any Rover trip.

Agreed, while social gatherings for most, I guess for those locked into a daily grind in metropolitan areas its the only chance/excuse some make to use their trucks as intended. Some people lack wanderlust and developed skills, and want to try their defenders out for something other than mall crawling in a group environment with experienced guys offering instruction .
Romp in Maine is unique. Kind of cool to completely take over a 150 rm hotel and have a building wide party with like minded enthusiasts in mid February.
For me, events are kind of like Rover car shows in so much as that part of it is checking out parts and accessories installed on other peoples trucks you have been considering and ask other owners their impressions.
